During our most recent interview with Ray Sands Glass President David Burns, we learned a bit about a passion that drove him to where he is today, as well as what he has to say to those who have the desire to open their own business.
How was it that you ended up finding your niche?
David Burns: I have always had a passion for automobiles and wanted to explore more opportunities in the automotive industry.
When it comes to running a business, what has been the biggest challenge for you?
David Burns: Dealing with the public and the employees; it’s hard to make everyone happy.
What would you say has been the biggest surprise?
David Burns: I’m always surprised on how hard it is to run and operate your own business. Nothing comes easy.
Have there been any big disappointments?
David Burns: People can be challenging! I always treat people with respect, and try to meet people in the middle, and sometimes that’s not enough.
Being a business owner can be very rewarding. What is the most rewarding part of it all for you?
David Burns: Being able to help our customers that are in dire straits and making them happy.
At this point in time, is Ray Sands Glass where you thought it would be?
David Burns: After thirty years of running Ray Sands Glass, I’m a little behind in some of my goals. I think we have all been impacted from the down economy.
Where do you see yourself in the next year? The next five?
David Burns: In the next year we plan on expanding into Webster, expanding our services. In five years we want to be the leader in window replacement, shower enclosures, and window film. In ten years, working only a forty hour week!
What kind of advice would you give to someone that may be thinking of starting a business?
David Burns: Be prepared to spend more money than you think, daily challenges, and working or thinking about your business 24/7.
Finally, has technology and the internet impacted how you conduct your business?
David Burns: Immensely. We have completely changed our website to be more user-friendly and information orientated. Advertising has changed from print to the Internet. We depend on technology every day and the minute our computers go down we cannot do our work. We are dependent on technology.
