2 Reasons SQL Performance may be Reduced

Written by Apple News Release on . Posted in Computers and Technology

SQL performance can be a significant concern for some data-intensive industries. For example, the volume of data processed in the healthcare industry is expected to increase at an annual growth rate of over 35% through 2025. A delay of a few seconds per record could result in thousands of hours of wasted time for just a single healthcare data center.

SQL performance, however, can be impacted by a number of latency issues. Here are two examples of SQL performance issues and their solutions.

SQL Server Timeouts

SQL timeouts can come in two different ways.

  1. A communications timeout can occur when communication delays between the SQL server and the querying server or device cause too much time to elapse between the query and the response.
  2. A command timeout can occur when the SQL server cannot find a response to a query before a preset time has elapsed. In other words, the device or server can communicate with the SQL server, but the SQL server itself is “running too slow.”

A command timeout often occurs as a result of fractured and randomized I/O. By the way it handles I/O, SQL servers inherently introduce messy I/O. As a result, SQL servers cannot avoid delays in writing to, and reading from, the SQL database.

V-Locity is designed to clean up this messy I/O. It uses DRAM caching to create continuous reads and writes rather than fragmented reads and writes. The result is that the records are more cleanly stored and, thus, can be more cleanly retrieved.

Fragmented Storage

Because SQL servers have a messy I/O, the SQL databases become fragmented. The fragmented way that SQL servers is not visibly obvious — the records will look fine on the screen. However, delays in retrieving the records from the database will be obvious in the time wasted between queries and responses.

When addressing SQL performance issues, SQL solutions must include defragmenting data storage. Contrary to how you might imagine a hard disc drive, it does not store a record in a continuous read. Rather, the disc tries to maximize efficiency by writing into available fragments using available addresses. However, over time, these fragments accumulate and, eventually, the hard drive spends as much, or more, time hunting down fragments as it does to retrieving data. The result is severe performance issues.

Fragmented storage can be solved in two ways.

  1. Acting proactively. Since fragmentation is a known issue with SQL servers (as well as any personal computer), V-locity’s IntelliWrite® and IntelliMemory® I/O optimization technology can be used from the start to prevent hard disc drives from becoming fragmented.
  2. Defragmenting. Diskeeper® 18 can defragment hard disc drives that have already become fragmented.

Whether your SQL server has already bogged down and is underperforming as a result of messy I/O and fragmented hard disc drives, or you have acquired a new system and want to avoid the inevitable SQL performance issues, software-based SQL solutions are available to optimize the performance of your SQL server.

Essextec Consulted as Business Risk Expert by Homeland Security Chairman and Pennsylvania Credit Union Association

Managed security services

Rochelle Park, NJ – November 4, 2013 – Essextec is preparing to close a major year during which the company was the subject of much adulation. Representatives of Essextec were chosen to address the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association (PCUA) on the topic of IT Security Analysis, and to meet with Senator Tom Carper, the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman, about cyber security.

Business Risk Analyst Joseph Kelly was invited to address the PCUA in response to increased frequency of cyber-terror attacks on depository institutions. Distributed denial-of-service attacks, causing Internet-based service outages by overloading network bandwidth and system resources, were of primary concern. Kelly, a professional with plenty of experience as a team leader in the medical, public accounting, finance, and military industries, presented “IT Security Analysis: Cyber Security and Social Engineering” to the PCUA team, adding this illustrious engagement to his already impressive resume. Kelly has also been a team leader for a CPA firm, has CISA, CompTIA Security+, CompTIA HIT, ITIL certifications, and a DOD secret security clearance. His white paper, “Electronic Prescriptions and Information Risks: Understanding Risks of Exposure as Use of e-Prescriptions Increases” has been used as a resource by many in the medical community.

Earlier in the year, senior executive Michael DaGrossa and Essextec’s Delaware risk team met with Senator Carper for a discussion focused on trends in the marketplace. They specifically addressed trends in critical infrastructure and in the education of organizations about their responsibilities to enforce and place controls and to develop repercussions for non-compliance. The team shared examples of vulnerability assessments, uncovering unknown areas of weakness and shining a light on the critical nature of risk and security in the private sector.

The recognition of Essextec as a reputable resource for both the public and private sectors has been a cause for celebration at Essextec. Essextec is headquartered at 201 W. Passaic Street in Rochelle Park, NJ. For more information, visit www.essextec.com, email exceed@essextec.com, or call 888-519-1518.

As James Connor discussed his business with us, we learned about his motivations for starting his own company, his vast experience in the cell phone business and how he has never felt the urge to give up, despite the difficulties that have come up along the way.

Let’s start from the beginning. What made you want to start your own business?

James Connor: I like the idea of being in control of my own destiny. To be in charge of my own opportunities and to have flexibility and not be tied down in a particular spot or place.

How would you describe My Broken Phone to a new customer?

James Connor: My Broken Phone does primarily cell phone repair services, but we are also a retail and service environment. We buy and sell phones and sell accessories.

How did you end up finding your niche?

James Connor: I had been in the cell phone accessory business since ’99 and was a bit frustrated with the overhead in the mall, and frustrated with the quality and accessibility of cell phone repair services. Everyone has a cell phone, and I saw a need in the marketplace for these services. Opened my first location and then it sprang boarded from there!

What can you tell us about your own background, education and work history?

James Connor: While I was a loyal and dedicated employee for one company for 15-plus years, I have always been looking for that perfect opportunity to empower myself. I have taken business classes in the past however have gained most of my knowledge through life experiences. I have always been interested in technology, which makes this business a perfect fit.

Can you tell us what steps you took to acquire the skills needed to run a company like My Broken Phone?

James Connor: Worked mostly in the cell phone accessory side, and then was a natural fit moving into the repair side of things. I looked for the best techs in the area and developed my own methods and repair techniques.

Over the past year, have any unexpected obstacles crept up along the way?

James Connor: Our biggest obstacle has probably been breaking the customers’ phones while trying to fix them. All phones are difficult to repair in the beginning, but once you do a few they become easier to fix.

Do you have a set business plan?

James Connor: No, no business plan. I originally started as an accessories boutique and selling unlocked phones, but then began to progress into mostly repairs and as well as buying, selling and trading phones.

Lastly, everyone knows that starting a business can be trying. Has there ever been a time that you thought about throwing it in?

James Connor: No. I never wanted to give up and am excited to watch My Broken Phone grow and succeed.

Based out of Riverview, Florida, My Broken Phone stands ready to handle every potential need that a customer could have, from buying and selling cell phones to repairs of all kinds.

Shared Web Hosting Directory

Web hosting directory

If you are looking to put up a webpage or other content, you will need to have it hosted by someone. The internet and the options for service providers it affords are huge. A shared web hosting directory can help you find potential service providers and other resources, like user reviews, can help you narrow that list down to the host you ultimately choose. If you need a dedicated server hosting directory, a cloud web hosting directory, or a directory for a similar service, there are several that are easy to find and will help guide you to the services you want to put your content on the web.
