An Interview with John Cornett, President of American Mechanical, Inc.

During our interview with John Cornett, we learned about his motivations for starting his own company, and the extensive education he obtained before starting his own company in 1994.

Why did you decide to start your own business?

John Cornett: I wanted to be in control of my own destiny.

Sounds simple enough. Can you describe your business to us?

John Cornett: We help in solving problems with plumbing, HVAC, electrical and generators.

How did you come to find your niche?

John Cornett: By the grace of God. I’ve always liked fixing things.

What can you tell us about your background, education and work history?

John Cornett: Graduated from high school, graduated from a five year apprenticeship, some college courses, many trade school classes. Purdue University certified to teach, apprenticeship, continuing education classes, master certificates in HVAC, plumbing, gas, contracting, and sales classes. Many self help programs on various subjects, along with the school of hard knocks.

What kind of steps did you take to acquire the skills needed to run American Mechanical, Inc.?

John Cornett: I worked for a large company that gave me the opportunity to learn about management and develop skills necessary for success.

Have there been any unexpected obstacles that have come up since you started in 1994?

John Cornett: The very first job I had, in business, burned down the night before I was to start it.

Wow. That had to have been discouraging! When you were ready to start your business, did you have a well defined business plan and has it changed over time?

John Cornett: The business today is exactly what I envisioned 20 years ago. Being a business owner, you always have to be flexible to the unanticipated.

Have you ever thought about giving up?

John Cornett: Giving up was not an option.

What would you say has been your biggest challenge as a business owner?

John Cornett: Finding employees that actually like to work.

Finally, what has the biggest surprise been over the years?

John Cornett: Actually getting money back from Uncle Sam one year!
